King of the Birds – The Goldcrest (Regulus regulus)
Weighing in at less than 6 grams, the goldcrest is Europe’s smallest bird. However what this tiny bird lacks in size is certainly makes up with it’s appearance, its beautiful golden crown might well have earned it the title of ‘King of the Birds’ in European folklore. Although a year round resident in the UK numbers swell in the winter as these tiny birds migrate from Scandinavia to Scotland travelling up to 700km to winter in the pine forests of Northern Scotland.
